Bob McGlotten is a partner in the legislative affairs consulting firms of McGlotten & Jarvis. After his retirement from the AFL-CIO in March 1995, Bob joined with long-time friend and fellow lobbyist, John Jarvis, to create their partnership. His clients include CSX Corporation, Edison Electric Institute, Entergy, HSBC, the International Longshoremen’s Association, the Office and Professional Employees International Union, and the Seafarers International Union.
During his 28-year tenure the American Federation of Labor, McGlotten served the 14 million-member organization in several capacities, most recently as its legislative director. He was appointed to that position in February 1986 by AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland. From that time until his retirement in 1995, McGlotten headed an 8-member staff of professional legislative representatives who presented the views of American labor to the United States Congress.
Bob McGlotten first joined the Federation’s Department of Civil Rights in 1967 and remained in that department until 1970. From June 1970 until March 1972, he was executive director of the Human Resources Development Institute, AFL-CIO. In that position, he directed a field staff of involvement in employment and training specialists in 50 cities and 30 states seeking to increase union involvement in employment programs. McGlotten’s other AFL-CIO titles include Legislative Department associate director from 1980 to 1986 and legislative representative from 1974 to 1980. In 1973 he was assigned to serve in the U.S. Department of Labor as special assistant to then Secretary Peter J. Brennan.
He also represented the National AFL-CIO at the National Alliance of Businessmen serving as vice president for Labor Relations. McGlotten’s tenure in the labor movement also included assignments with the American Federation of Teachers and the United Steelworkers of America. In addition, he is a former staff representative of the Transport Workers Union.
McGlotten has received awards from the National Alliance of Businessmen, National Urban League, and the Recruitment and Training Program. He is the recipient of the Congressional Black Caucus 1981 William L. Dawson Award, the Opportunities Industrialization Center of America’s 1989 Award of Honor for A. Phillip Randolph, and the 1987 A. Phillip Randolph Institute Achievement Award. In addition, McGlotten was the Embassy of Israel’s Dr. Martin Luther King Commemoration 1990 Civil Rights Award recipient. He presently serves on the boards of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, National Council for Political Management. George Washington University, and is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and St. Joseph’s College for Industrial and Labor Management. McGlotten also served two and a half years in the U.S. Army. He is married to the former Cheryl Good.
